Located in Oakland County, Birmingham is considered a suburb of Detroit. Found along the Wood-ward Corridor, the small city has a history that goes back to the early 19th century. As of the 2020 cen-sus, Birmingham is home to 21,813, an increase in the population of just over 8.0% from 2010.
The area where the city is located is part of the land ceded by Native Americans to the US government as part of the 1807 Treaty of Detroit. Owing to the outbreak of the War of 1812, it would be several years before the first land entry took place. That would be in 1819 and was granted to Colonel Benja-min Kendrick Pierce, whose brother Franklin Pierce would eventually become the 14th President of the United States.
More settlers arrived in the area by the beginning of 1821. At that time, the First Methodist Episcopal Church was founded. In 1839, a new building was built by the congregation and continues to serve the First United Methodist Church of Birmingham today. It’s the oldest of the many houses of worship that serve the community.
Birmingham is also home to one of the oldest newspapers in the area. Founded as The Eccentric in 1878, the paper continued to expand in the decades following. It still serves the community today, both in print form and in an online edition.
There are more than 20 parks found throughout the city. Within those parks, residents and visitors can enjoy features like baseball fields, playgrounds for children, picnic areas, and natural trails. One of the most popular parks is known as Shain Park. This park serves as the site for the annual Village Fair, as well as hosting concerts, art shows, and other cultural events throughout the year. The park is also home to the Freedom of Human Spirit, a sculpture created by Marshall Fredericks.
