Found in Oakland County, Bloomfield Hills is considered to be a northern suburb of Metro Detroit. Geographically, the city is located roughly 20 miles northwest of the downtown Detroit area. The area is somewhat unique in that Bloomfield Hills is a city that is surrounded by a township (Bloomfield Township), with only one small area along the city’s southern boundary fond along the border of the city of Birmingham. According to the most recent census, the city is home to 3,988 residents.

In 1820, what is modern-day Oakland County was divided into two townships: Pontiac Township and Bloomfield Township. The area where Bloomfield Hills is found today was considered farmland well into the 20th century. It would not be until the beginning of the century that wealthy residents of Detroit began to purchase parcels of land and establish residences in the area. This eventually led to the formation of Bloomfield Hills as a village in 1927. 

Over the next few years, there was growing concern among the residents that Bloomfield Hills would be annexed by Birmingham. In order to prevent this from happening, the residents voted to launch their own incorporation as a city, completing the process in 1932. 

The city is home to the National Historic Landmark Cranbrook Educational Community, as well as a number of other sites that are designated as historical places on the National Registry. The combination of natural beauty and some of the architecture dating back to the 19th century has made the area ideal for motion picture filming. Since the beginning of the 21st century, a number of movies have been filmed in whole or in part in the area.
