In 1820, what is modern-day Oakland County was divided into two townships: Pontiac Township and Bloomfield Township. The area where Bloomfield Hills is found today was considered farmland well into the 20th century. It would not be until the beginning of the century that wealthy residents of Detroit began to purchase parcels of land and establish residences in the area. This eventually led to the formation of Bloomfield Hills as a village in 1927.
Over the next few years, there was growing concern among the residents that Bloomfield Hills would be annexed by Birmingham. In order to prevent this from happening, the residents voted to launch their own incorporation as a city, completing the process in 1932.
The city is home to the National Historic Landmark Cranbrook Educational Community, as well as a number of other sites that are designated as historical places on the National Registry. Since the beginning of the 21st century, a number of movies have been filmed in whole or in part in the area.
