Part of Oakland County, Farmington Hills is considered a northern suburb of the Metro Detroit Area. According to the 2020 US census results, the city is home to 83,986 residents. This makes Farmington Hills the second most populous city in the country, after the city of Troy.
Land for what would eventually be known as Farmington Hills was purchased in 1823. The original purchase was granted to Arthur Power. A Quaker, Power returned to the area in 1824 with family and a group of others with the intention of clearing the land and founding a settlement. Originally, the plan was to dub the settlement Quakertown.
By the time the first post office was established in the settlement, it was beginning to be known as Farmington. With the official organization of the Farmington Township the following year, the settlement continues with the latter name until the winter of 1866-67. At that time, the township was organized into a village. The incorporation into a city followed in 1926.
Other surrounding townships and villages were incorporated during the 20th century. By 1973, a number of those jurisdictions had made the decision to become part of Farmington Hills. Those included nearby Quakertown, which has become a village in 1959, and Woodcreek Farms, a village incorporated in 1957.
