Facts about Farmington, MI

Located in Oakland County, Farmington is a city that is considered part of the Metro Detroit area. The city is completely surrounded by Farmington Hills, except for a small area that is bordered by the city of Livonia along the southern area. As of the 2020 census, Farmington is home to 10,395 residents.

What would eventually be known as the communities of Farmington and Farmington Hills is situated along three different Native American trails. Local history continues to honor that heritage, with infor-mation about the Orchard Lake Trail, the Grand River Trail, and the Shiawassee Trail readily available.

Arthur Power purchased the land where Farmington and other nearby settlements were established dur-ing the early 19th century. Plans were originally to establish a settlement that would be known as Quakertown. That name was later used for the name of a smaller settlement in the area. By the end of the 1820s, the name of Farmington has come into common usage. The name is said to be in honor of Power’s hometown: Farmington, New York.

Confusion about the names of Farmington and Farmington Hills has been present since those early years. In fact, Farmington refers to the smaller municipality that was created in the early 19th century. The larger city of Farmington Hills was organized as a township first, later a village, and finally in 1973 as a city. The latter more or less surrounds the smaller jurisdiction. Owing to the proximity, the National Register of Historic Places declared the smaller city part of the Farmington Historic District in 1976.

Farmington is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in the country. In 2013, CNN Money listed the city at #27 on it’s list of the best places to live. Much of that had to do with the investments made in improving the city’s infrastructure and renovating the city center.
