As part of the Southfield Township, Franklin is a village located in Oakland County. With a current population of 3,221, the village has a reputation for being one of the more exclusive places to live in the area. Along with larger estates, it’s also the site of the first historic district organized in the state of Michigan. The listing on the National Register of Historic Places occurred in 1969.
The first settlers in what would become Franklin arrived in the area in the 1824-25 era. As the settlement attracted more attention, the decision was made to come up with a formal name for the community. This was done in 1831 when the residents chose the present name, which had been under consideration as early as 1828. It’s in honor of Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States.
The business district that was formed in 1830 continued to grow in the following years, even as more people began to buy land and establish estates in the area. Even so, it would be some time before steps were taken to incorporate Franklin. That finally happened in 1953, when it became a village.
Franklin played a key role in the Underground Railroad, serving as a station before and during the Civil War. The estimated number of people who passed through the station and later settled in the area or continued on into Canada remains unclear, but the number is considered to be significant.
The village has retained the charm and appearance that was found in many Michigan villages during the 19th century. Visitors are able to tour buildings that have been preserved to provide a glimpse into what life was like in the past. At the same time, the village offers modern amenities that ensure residents and visitors alike can enjoy the area in complete comfort.
