Facts about Southfield, MI

Known as a northern suburb of Detroit, Southfield is a city found in Oakland County. At one time, it was part of the Southfield Township before incorporating into it’s own entity in 1958. It has the distinction of being home to Michigan’s second-tallest building (the Southfield Town Center Complex) outside Detroit, and the 16th tallest building in the state overall. As of the most recent census, Southfield is home to 72,174 residents.

What would eventually become Southfield was first surveyed in 1817. The survey took place in accordance with plans by the territorial governor Lewis Cass to formally settle the area. In the years to follow, settlers from nearby locations like Birmingham and Royal Oak received land entries. There were also settlers coming from as far away as Vermont and New York. By 1823, the number of residents in the area were sufficient enough to begin making the first moves forward, formally organizing as a township and then a city.

The township carried a different name for a short time. On July 12, 1830, it was organized as the Ossewa Township. That proved to be short-lived, as the name officially became Southfield Township in less than three weeks. The inspiration for the name came from the south fields of the Bloomfield Township. By 1833, the township has its first post office. The first town hall was constructed in 1873.

By the middle of the 20th century, areas that had been part of the Township began to incorporate as separate villages and cities. What remained of the original jurisdiction incorporated as Southfield in 1958. Part of the motivation was to avoid the attempts by the city of Detroit to annex what was left of the old Township.

Today, Southfield is home to a thriving business center than includes headquarters and major hubs for a number of corporations. These include International Automotive Components, Guardian Alarm, and Huf Hülsbeck and Fürst. All told, more than a hundred Fortune 500 companies maintain offices and/or facilities in Southfield.
